While the BDS movement tried to take credit for Uefa's decision not to name Jerusalem as one of the 13 host cities for the Euro 2020 tournament, the ruling has a lot more to do with the incompetence of the IFA, Israel's national football association, than political considerations.

Jerusalem's Teddy Stadium made it to the shortlist of 19, but was dropped due to the fact that the bid issued by the IFA failed to include the necessary safety certificates and evacuation plans for the stadium, or other details such as the number of available hotel rooms in Jerusalem around the time of the group stages of the tournament.

Teddy currently seats 34,000 spectators and is Israel's second-largest football venue after the International Stadium in Ramat Gan. Last summer, it hosted the Uefa under-21 tournament.

The Israeli bid to host Euro 2020 games, which will be taking place on the tournament's 60th anniversary, included plans to expand Teddy Stadium to over 50,000 seats, but lacked information on what media facilities would be provided. The fact the conflict in Gaza delayed the opening of the Israeli league probably also played a part in Uefa's decision.
