£260,000 raised for Orthodox schools

New charity aims to raise £1 million a year to subsidise Jewish schools in London

A campaign set up to support Orthodox Jewish schools in London has raised more than a quarter of a million pounds in three years.

Chomesh L’Chinuch (CLC) distributed more than £156,000 to 22 London Jewish schools in its third annual grant round, bringing the total of funds allocated since its launch in 2015 to £260,000.

CLC asks shul members to donate a fifth (“chomesh”) of their charity to local education each year.

Rabbi Shloime Yitzchok Bixenspanner, of Hendon Adath Yisroel Congregation, which hosted school leaders on Sunday, said the North-West London community was “clearly able to address its schools’ substantial shortfall provided it allocates and prioritises the already generous amount of annual tzedokoh it donates”.

CLC estimates local Orthodox schools face an annual shortfall of £7 million and has set a target of raising a £1 million a year.

Moishe Lisser, chairman of Pardes House Grammar School, said: “To deliver the best Torah chinuch [education] for our talmidim [students], we need to ensure strong and stable funding from the North-West London community.”
