Like other events since the coronavirus outbreak, the fourth annual Ivrit spelling bee moved online this year, with 17 students from six schools competing.

Each pupil had a minute to spell a selection of words in Hebrew from a list they had been learning over the previous few months.

For the non-Hebrew speakers, it was a clean sweep for the north, with the top prize going to Ilana Fagleman from Broughton Jewish Cassel Fox and runners up Brachi Schwartz and Estee Schreiband from the same school, along with Lili Frost from King David Manchester.

In the Ivrit speakers’ category, Yehudit Greenhouse of Broughton tied for first place with Yshai Carmi of Akiva in London.

The event is run by Pajes, the Jewish Leadership Council’s schools network, and Routes into Language East in conjunction this year with JLGB.

Dalia Wittenberg, primary Ivrit adviser for Pajes, said it was “a testament to the students and their wonderful teachers that even during lockdown they have continued practising their Ivrit — they are a credit to their schools”.
