Jeffrey Leader, the director of the Board of Deputies-run inspection service for Jewish studies in schools, is to step down at the end of December after seven years in the post.

He said, “After over 50 years of professional work in the field of Jewish, I feel that it is time for a fresh pair of hands to take up the reins and guide the organisation forward. It is an exciting time for Jewish education”.

During his tenure, he oversaw the introduction of a new framework for Pikuach which put strong emphasis on “spiritual development”.

He said he was confident this would result in “more enlightened teachers providing more meaningful Jewish teachign and learning to the forthcoming generations”.

Pikuach, the only Jewish service accredited by the Department for Education to carry out inspections for religious education, will resume inspections this term after they were suspended following the Covid-19 lockdown in March last year.

Jonathan Miller, chairman of Pikuach, said, “Under Jeffrey’s leadership, Pikuach has gone from strength to strength.

“Jeffrey’s contribution to education in this country rightly warranted an MBE, which he received last year in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.”

Mr Leader’s previous roles included the headship of Simon Marks Primary School and running the United Synagogue’s Agency for Jewish Education.
