There was a big turnout at Kingston, Surbiton and District Synagogue on Shabbat for the third barmitzvah of Harold Shattock, 96.

Born in Surbiton, he and his many siblings and step-siblings lived above his parents’ ladies’ fashion shop. His first barmitzvah was at Richmond Synagogue in 1935 (the current Kingston community was not established until after the war).

Following service as an aerial photographer in the RAF, Mr Shattock studied medicine. But when his father became seriously ill, he took over the family business, running the Surbiton shop for more than 30 years.

He said of his latest barmitzvah: “Throughout the day, I was thinking how fortunate I am to have been spared to be able to celebrate surrounded by family and friends.”
