Three rabbis, two Christian clergy and a police officer were among the 100-person turnout for a service celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Woodford Liberal Synagogue building on Sunday.
Woodford's Rabbi Richard Jacobi put together a civic service containing some of the east London community's favourite prayers.
Prominent members took it in turns to lead prayers, or read passages detailing the history of the synagogue and Liberal Judaism.
The community was founded in 1960 as Woodford and District Liberal Jewish Group and moved into the current Marlborough Road premises in 1966, having purchased the building for £2,600.
A heartfelt speech by Liberal Judaism chair Simon Benscher - who has spent his life in the Woodford Liberal fold - concluded the anniversary ceremony.
It pushes boundaries and never discriminates
"For almost half of the time that Liberal Judaism has been flourishing in the UK, this building has welcomed countless numbers of people - Jews and non-Jews, the young and the not so young - constantly pushing boundaries and never discriminating," he said.
"All who enter these doors have experienced the warm, family-orientated atmosphere that comes so naturally from the amazing people who call this their synagogue.
"Woodford has played, and continues to play, a big part in the fabric of Jewish life in this area. I am proud of it, Liberal Judaism is proud of it and, most importantly, every member here should also be proud of it."
The weekend also marked the silver weddings of leading members David and Tina Gold and Bob and Di Kamall.
Woodford Liberal has an adult membership of around 325 and a large number of children, 35 of whom attend its cheder.
