Who Do We Think We Are?

We're British Jews. We're religious and we're not religious. We keep Shabbat and we don't even know what Shabbat is, except that we thank the Lord (in whom we don't believe) that it's Friday. We love Israel. We love the Tel Aviv beach. Israeli politics make us twitch. We are really comfortable here. We are really uncomfortable here and possibly everyone hates us. Jews don't get a fair hearing in this country. Jews make a terrific contribution to British society. Why do they have programmes about Jews on tv? Why do Jews come over so badly on tv and film? We mean, after all... who do we think we are?

If there's one thing on which we all agree, it's that Jewish identity is a twisted and tangled subject - and we all have an opinion on it. To shed some light, the JC, in association with the Jewish Community Centre for London, is holding an exciting one-off debate next Monday night (September 5).

Under the chairmanship of Guardian and JC columnist Jonathan Freedland, you can LISTEN LIVE to the views of prominent UK Jews: Luciana Berger MP; Julia Hobsbawm, chief executive of Editorial Intelligence; Anthony Julius, deputy chairman of law firm Mishcon de Reya; Ian Livingston, chief executive of British Telecom; Baroness (Julia) Neuberger, senior rabbi at West London Synagogue; Amy Rosenthal, playwright and Lord (George) Weidenfeld, chairman of publishing house Weidenfeld & Nicholson.
