The Shop
3 Cheshire Street, London E2 6ED
Sharon Selzer has been selling an eclectic selection of vintage clothing, bags, shoes, jewellery, hats, scarves and household textiles since long before the area become hip. Originally supplying costume designers, she has a matchless eye for fabric and detail. Expect to find original Biba, Polly Peck, Mansfield, Susan Small and the odd piece of couture. Prices are amazingly low but be prepared to rummage.

Rewind Vintage
www.rewindvintage.co.uk
Online vintage fashion store Rewind Vintage was launched by refugees from the world of luxe, Claudia Ricco and Yasmina Khanlari. Everything is from the closets of fashionistas and celebrities and includes items like 80s Alaia dresses and early Chanel quilted bags. Regular labels include Balmain, Givenchy, Paco Rabanne and St Laurent. A "Rare Corner" section has show stoppers like an Hermès chinchilla coat.

Love Miss Daisy
www.lovemissdaisy.com
Another online vintage store, offering clothing and accessories sorted under eras, from 40s to 80s, as well as homewares. Prices are erratic: a sparkly 1950s top is £25, a cotton frock £65, but worth a virtual rummage. Jan Shure

Carpe Diem
Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, 30124, Venice (0033 41 528 9803)
Just 10 minutes from St Mark's, the shop is a treasure trove of vintage clothing, much of it from top designers and all in near-mint condition. The fact that most Italian women prefer cookie-cutter conformity, means the juiciest pickings are left for tourists to scavenge. Clothing and accessory labels are by names like Chanel, Dior, Moschino, Bottega Veneta, Krizia, Fendi and YSL.
