The 82-year-old fundraiser has volunteered for the residential nursing home in Leeds for the past 45 years.
Why Donisthorpe?
The people we care for at Donisthorpe sacrificed a lot to help make a better and more secure life for their children. This is now their home and we must fill their twilight years with light, love and laughter.
What does your volunteering involve?
I usually organise two charity dinners a year and apart from organising a brochure, selling tickets, raising money in sponsorship and supervising menu and entertainment I like to stage them as if they are my own simchas. I also sit on the executive committee.
What do you most enjoy about being a volunteer?
Meeting our wonderful residents on a one-to-one basis; they all know me and I love to see the smiles on their faces. I visit the home every day and drop in to have a chat about their welfare; they are my extended family.
What are your most memorable volunteering moments?
Bringing the Las Vegas spectacular The Spirit of the Dance to Donisthorpe last year and raising in excess of £25,000. Another wonderful moment was winning the Leeds Jewish Welfare Board’s Pride Awards’ “Personality of the Year”. I burst into tears when my name was called out.
