The 94-year-old has volunteered for Leeds Jewish welfare causes for more than 60 years
Why LJWB?
When my children were small I started volunteering for welfare organisations around the 1940s and the first charity was the Kosher Kitchen, a service provider for hospitals. This led to working for the Welfare Board, where I helped prepare and serve meals at the Queenshill Centre.
What does your volunteering involve?
I am a befriender for Leeds Jewish Blind Society and I take a visually impaired lady, 20 years my junior, out shopping and then I drive us both somewhere for tea. It's a weekly treat that we both look forward to.
Do you volunteer elsewhere?
I am also a life vice-president of Leeds Wizo Council and have been a member of Henrietta Szold Wizo for many years where I am co-chair. I still roll up my sleeves in the kitchens when there is a big Wizo function.
What do you most enjoy about being a volunteer?
Having the health and strength at 94 to take an active part in my community.
What is your most memorable volunteering moment?
The presentation two years ago of a life achievement award from the Welfare Board was a proud moment. Having Chief Rabbi SirJonathan Sacks present it to me was very special. He said I was "living proof that the more you give to others the younger you become yourself".
