The retired television shop owner has volunteered at the Wandsworth, south London care home for over 10 years. He also volunteers at King’s College Hospital, visiting Jewish patients and working on the help desk
Why Nightingale?
I cared for an elderly gentleman from my shul in Hackney who moved to Nightingale. I continued to visit him at Nightingale and noticed that the care home was looking for volunteers — I became a regular volunteer and have not looked back since.
What does your current volunteering role involve?
I come in once a week from Kent, which is some distance away, to play Scrabble with a 96-year-old lady. We usually fit in two games and I am usually beaten, but on the odd occasion that I win, I am truly chuffed.
What do you most enjoy about being a volunteer?
I get a lot of pleasure from giving my time to the residents and being able to see their positive reactions to my weekly visits.
What is your most memorable volunteering moment?
The resident that I play Scrabble with is a dementia sufferer but she still manages to be a wizard at the game. Recently I managed to win a first game in a year against her. I was so happy that I told all the residents.
