The retired building society mortgage consultant has volunteered at the Jewish Care home in Hove since 2004
Why Hyman Fine?
I had a cousin who was a resident at Hyman Fine House. She was very well cared for and, after her death, I wanted to maintain the relationships I had made with other residents and the excellent staff.
What does your volunteering involve?
Every Friday I read the JC to the residents and discuss anything of interest relating to the paper and other subjects which may arise. I also offer my help where needed.
What do you most enjoy about being a volunteer?
Some residents really look forward to our Friday discussions; I do feel that many have become my friends.
What are your most memorable volunteering moments?
After I first read out the JC, I saw smiling faces and was asked if I would come back next week. That for me said it all. Also, last year I was the Hyman Fine House volunteer of the year. I felt very privileged to have been singled out among the volunteers. The award has pride of place in my lounge.
