Former secretary Beatrice Moss, 82, has volunteered for more than 35 years. She lives in Hendon, north -west London
Why these charities?
I chose these charities because I am a skilled knitter, seamstress and embroiderer and I thought that I might be most useful in a handicraft department. When my children were sufficiently off my hands, I became a volunteer for Jewish Care at the Sobell Centre and for Ravenswood.
What does your volunteering involve?
Nowadays, I am a volunteer at Jami in Golders Green and for Jewish Care with my “pat” dog, Alice. I go to the Ellen and Jacob Ridley residential home, to the Sam Beckman centre and to Clore Manor where my dog is a most welcome visitor. On my weekly visits to Jami I play any game requested by members or just listen when they want to talk.
Do you volunteer elsewhere?
In my spare time, I visit a number of ladies who are physically incapacitated. I encourage them to chat to me as mostly they lack social contacts.
What do you most enjoy about being a volunteer?
I greatly enjoy feeling that I am doing some good by helping others.
What is your most memorable volunteering moment?
This was when I took my dog to one of the homes and a lady who had had a stroke leaned forward and patted her and smiled, apparently for the first time since her stroke.
