North East Jewish Community Services

The former assistant industrial development officer for the North East Development Council retired in 1980. Ann has volunteered for the North East Jewish Community Services luncheon club since 1953, and is a founder member of Rosa Wollstein Wizo Group in Newcastle. She is treasurer of NEJCS, and is a former director of Phillip Cussins House care home. She also fundraises for NSPCC
Why the NEJCS luncheon club?
I always thought that there were other people who needed help financially or otherwise and wanted to support all the mentioned charities in a positive way.
What does your volunteering involve?
I organise and plan the menu and shop before cooking a three-course meal for members of the luncheon club. The club is held at the United Hebrew Congregation and serves fortnightly lunches for 20 to 30 people from the Newcastle and wider Jewish community. I have a team of volunteers on the day to help with serving food and setting tables. The Chanucah luncheon is always oversubscibed.
What do you most enjoy about being a volunteer ?
I enjoy helping other people while I am still able to do so.
What is your most memorable volunteering moment?
I held a very successful coffee morning in my own home, raising over £1,000 for NEJCS.
