Retired taxi cab driver Alan Harris, 84, has volunteered at the North London Hospice since 2001
Why the hospice?
I decided to volunteer at the hospice after the death of my wife and the death of a friend who was in the hospice suffering from cancer.
What does your current volunteering involve?
I help to keep the hospice’s kitchen clean and in order. I wash up dishes and take meals to the patients in their wards. I also talk to the patients; it’s a very tiring routine! The chief executive said that if not for the volunteers’ efforts, the hospice would not be able to function as we provide services they would otherwise have to pay for.
What do you most enjoy about being a volunteer?
The pleasure of helping with the general running of the hospice.
What is your most memorable volunteering moment?
Every moment in the hospice is a “feelgood moment”.
