Sufferin’ Safran

Schadenfoer was the colourful term invoked by Los Angeles Times reviewer Sarah Weinman on the Guardian books blog recently to define the sour-grape jealousy apparently widely directed at the spectacularly successful (and young) Jewish writer Jonathan Safran Foer. It has, Weinman claims, had Foer's agent Nicole Aragi “tearing her hair out”. It came to a head recently with the off-Broadway production of The Four Of Us, a play by Foer’s (alleged) friend, Itamar Moses, about the unfairness of the distribution of riches and acclaim between writers. What comparable phenomena could emerge if the trend spread in the UK? Aaronobitching? Critics reviewing Jane Green with envy? And, even after their target’s recent death, some remain Pinter bitter.
