The retired plumber has volunteered at Burnfield, Newark Care's Giffnock-based residential home since 2006. He also lends his support to the Chabad Lubavitch's Shul in the Park, which is housed in Burnfield care home
● Why Newark Care?
I chose to volunteer at Burnfield because of my close links with the Jewish community.
● What does your current volunteering role involve?
A normal day for me at Burnfield would be seeing to any plumbing problems, picking up supplies, taking residents and carers to medical appointments or the local shopping centre. I also like to have a chat with residents. I feel that by doing so keeps them in touch with the outside community and they always have a story to tell me. I also ask the residents if they want to come to the Shul in the Park, and if they do I take them. I maintain the shul, setting out the seats etc so that it can conduct the services in the home's lounge.
● What do you most enjoy about being a volunteer?
Reminiscing with the residents as we often have close connections in the community.
● What is your most memorable volunteering moment?
I brought a resident to the Shul in the Park who normally did not communicate with anyone. He was given an aliyah which he carried out spontaneously. To see this level of enjoyment was so rewarding.
