At Channing Junior School a strong sense of belonging is not something that happens by chance. It is something we intentionally and thoughtfully nurture every single day. From the moment the girls arrive in the morning to the many interactions that shape their day, there is a shared understanding that every child should feel seen, valued and connected.

This sense of belonging sits at the heart of our community. It is reflected in the warmth of relationships between pupils and staff, in the kindness shown between peers and in the confidence with which the girls move through their school day. There is a genuine feeling that each child has a place here and that who they are is recognised and celebrated.

Belonging is one of the most powerful forces in a child’s life. It underpins how they feel about themselves, how they approach learning and how they build relationships with others. At its simplest, it is the feeling of being accepted for who you are and knowing that you matter.

When a child feels that they belong, they are far more likely to flourish. They approach learning with confidence and curiosity because they feel safe enough to take risks. They are willing to make mistakes and try again because they know they are supported. They engage more fully with others, forming positive friendships and developing the skills needed to navigate the social world around them. In essence, belonging creates the foundation for both academic success and emotional wellbeing.
