Nottingham JSoc has held the country’s first Booze for Jews event of the new academic year.

With the flagship party suffering a slight drop in attendances nationally in the past 12 months, the Nottingham committee took a new approach, giving the celebration a theme and embarking on a fresh marketing initiative.

The “frat pack” theme saw Booze for Jews co-hosted by JSoc with the country’s first Jewish fraternity — the Nottingham-based Zeta Beta Tau.

More than 800 students from across the country joined in the fun at the Forum nightclub in the city on Sunday last week, with coaches bringing in revellers from Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester.

Break-dancers, fire-eaters and stilt-walkers were among the entertainment on offer.

For the first time at a Booze for Jews the JSoc sold VIP tables. The event was sponsored by Camp America, Jeneration and Red Bull.

Organiser Roxy Kaye, Nottingham JSoc social secretary, said: “I was slightly worried about abandoning the old approach, but it really paid off. It was an amazing night and really lived up to our expectations.”

Party-goer Max Sobell said: “I enjoyed Booze for Jews so much this year, more than any others I’ve been to in the past, because it was so different, with a variety of entertainment, and all my friends from other campuses were there to share it with me.”

● Vscheme, the volunteering initiative set up by Nottingham student Ricky Kaplan last year, has been extended across the country by UJS.

Volunteering opportunities will now be co-ordinated for students by any JSocs wishing to participate.
