A Jewish student has been voted on to a senior position on the UK's umbrella student organisation.

Rachel Wenstone was elected as the next vice president higher-education of the National Union of Students at its annual conference in Sheffield on Wednesday.

Ms Wenstone, a Leeds University graduate and a former sabbatical officer at Leeds University Union, was already in her second year on the NUS national executive committee "Block of 15". The new position is full time.

Ms Wenstone, a former winner of the UJS Alan Senitt Memorial Trust award and a postgraduate student at the LSE, triumphed over two other candidates to win the role under the alternative vote system.
