Our money, but not our information

Further to my post below on the Children's Commissioner, I must tell you that eliciting the total annual budget from the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish commissioners' offices was an interesting experience.

The English commission told me the figure straight away. The Welsh office checked and called me back within five minutes. The Scottish office said that such information was not easily obtained, and that I had to submit a formal request which would be logged and considered. I did that, and am of course still waiting to hear back. As for the Northern Irish commission: I spoke to two different people, left two voicemail messages, and have still heard nothing.

It's only our money: why should we expect to be able to know how much of it is being spent?
