In Manchester last week, a dozen Jews held a meeting with Tommy Robinson, the former leader of the English Defence League. That is, of course, their right. But that does not make it right.

The EDL, whatever it may have claimed about being against radical Islam rather than Islam itself, never managed to adhere to that distinction in its marches and rallies.

Mr Robinson has since been involved with a number of fringe organisations, from the ‘British Freedom Party’ to a British chapter of the German group Pegida. It is understandable that some in our community are frustrated with the efforts of mainstream organisations to tackle antisemitism within the Muslim community.

And when a man like Mr Robinson says the right things about tackling antisemitism, one can see the lure.
