The image of the Charedi community is that it is archaic, stuck in a long-gone past and entirely unsuitable for the modern world. That image is woefully misguided; the branches of Charedi Judaism are many and varied, and contain some of the most go-ahead, thought provoking and thoroughly modern men and women in Anglo-Jewry. But sometimes they do not help themselves. Last week's letter barring women from driving is an outrage - a form of repression of one gender that invites and deserves ridicule.
