Age cannot wither

This Sunday sees the annual Ajex parade on Whitehall. Far from diminishing in relevance, with every passing year its importance increases.

As the millions who went to look at the sea of poppies at the Tower of London showed, younger generations are no less in awe of the contribution of those who gave their lives in the two world wars than are their contemporaries. And, as current members of the armed forces have also made the ultimate sacrifice so that the rest of us are safe, so too their friends and families value the support shown on such occasions.

There did seem a time when the Ajex parade might wither away as the generation that fought in the Second World War passed away. But the presence of so many from younger generations, either on parade or in the watching crowd, is a testament to the organisation's health and a wonderful statement about the role and purpose of the parade itself.

Many of us will pay our tribute on Sunday. And even those who will not be there in person will be there in spirit.
