Germany’s top Jewish leader has issued a chilling warning about an “explosive” rise in antisemitism.
The president of Central Council of Jews in Germany, Josef Schuster, said vehement hostility towards Jews had reached a “new dimension” in a speech launching an exhibition to mark 75 years of the leadership body.
Only five years after the end of the Shoah, Jewish leaders in Germany founded the Central Council on 19 July 1950 in Frankfurt am Main.
But now, 75 years later, that same body is warning that same hatred has not disappeared.
“Since 7 October we have felt an explosive rise in antisemitism,” Schuster told guests at the Braunschweig State Theatre, where the show – titled In Our Own Voice: 75 Years of the Central Council of Jews in Germany – was formally opened.
He added that while anti-Jewish hatred had never vanished from Germany, in the aftermath of the Hamas terror attacks, it had surged dramatically. “If we want to confront antisemitism, it requires decisive political action,” he said.
