One of the most controversial political commentators in the US has been sacked from his role on a major US news network.

Pat Buchanan had already been suspended by MSNBC, but this week the network said it was parting ways with the social conservative pundit.

The decision came in the light of the publication of his latest book Suicide of a Superpower, which including musings on "The End of White America.

Critics complained that the book was variously antisemitic, racist and homophobic.

Mr Buchanan, who sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1996, is known for his "antisemitic, racist and anti-immigrant views", according to the US hate monitor, the Anti-Defamation League.

The ADL published a report examining Mr Buchanan's activity three years ago, noting that he had "repeatedly demonised Jews and minorities and has openly affiliated with white supremacists. He has also claimed that the sovereignty of the United States is being undermined by Israeli control."

The organisation has also described Mr Buchanan as an "unrepentant bigot" and expressed concern about "the growing antisemitism and bigotry behind Buchanan's mainstream façade".

Writing on the American Conservative website, Mr Buchanan accused the ADL and similar groups of "smear[ing] and stigmatis[ing] as racist, homophobic, or antisemitic any who contradict what George Orwell once called their 'smelly little orthodoxies'."

He added that the end of his ten year stint as "a political analyst at MSNBC" had come because of "incessant clamour from the left that to permit me continued access to the microphones of MSNBC would be an outrage against decency, and dangerous".

He called MSNBC's decision "an undeniable victory for the blacklisters".

MSNBC's president, Phil Griffin, said last year of Mr Buchanan: "The ideas he put forth aren’t really appropriate for national dialogue."
