Peter Meagher, who was working as a freelance photographer at the Bondi Beach “Chanukah by the Sea” event, has been named as one of the 15 victims to have lost their lives as a result of the Sydney terror attack.
Meagher, known as “Marzo”, was a central and perennial figure at Randwick Rugby Club, where he “was a much-loved figure and absolute legend in our club”, according to Mark Harrison, the club’s general manager.
“With decades of voluntary involvement, he was one of the heart and soul figures of Randwick Rugby”, Harrison said.
Meagher had served as one of the club’s top-flight manager since 2018 and was also a “well-known and respected” referee.
He was the grandson of Wallabies Hall of Fame member Wally Meagher, and his father Ron was a former Club President for Randwick.
Meagher also spent nearly four decades in the New South Wales Police Force before retiring as a Detective Sergeant, where he was “hugely respected by colleagues”.
Harrison continued: “The tragic irony is that he spent so long in the dangerous front line as a police officer and was struck down in retirement while taking photos in his passion role is really hard to comprehend”.
He added: “For him it was simply a catastrophic case of being in the wrong place and at the wrong time".
The club’s general manager said that the rugby fan’s death “has already hit our players, coaches, managers, volunteers, and supporters extremely hard".
