An Israeli student was stabbed at the headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in Crown Heights, New York, on Tuesday morning.
The 49-year-old assailant reportedly shouted "kill the Jews" as he launched his attack.
New York police have said that there was "no indication" the attacker, identified as Calvin Peters, was connected to a terrorist group.
Local reports described Peters as "mentally ill". He was shot dead by police during the attack.
The victim, Levi Rosenblat, sustained a wound to the side of his head but was in stable condition following the incident.
New York state Assemblyman Dov Hikind, whose Brooklyn constituents are largely Orthodox Jews, said the entire Jewish community had been affected by the attack, adding that synagogues may want to start taking stronger security precautions. He said: "Maybe it is time for synagogues… to figure out, if someone walks in with a knife, how do you defend yourself?"
Chabad-Lubavitch officials said that security had been tightened.
