The fourth victim of the New York City mass shooting on Monday has been named as Julia Hyman, 27, a Cornell graduate and "proud young Jewish woman".
The incident in Manhattan in an office building housing companies including Blackstone, Rudin Management and the NFL saw an armed man named by the media as Shane Tamura walking into the building and opening fire in the lobby. He then got on the lift and went up to the 33rd floor, opened fire again, and then turned the gun on himself, reportedly in an attempt to target the offices of the NFL.
All four victims have now been named.
Hyman, from Manhattan, was an employee of Rudin Management, where she had worked for nine months. She was working on the 33rd floor of 345 Park Avenue when the attack happened.
Hyman graduated five years ago from the Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University.
Nolan School dean Kate Walsh said Hyman was an "extraordinary student whose academic achievements and intellectual curiosity made a lasting impression".
The president of Cornell University, Michael I. Kotlikoff, has also paid tribute in an open letter to students. He wrote: "We are devastated for Julia’s friends and family, including her parents and sister Ali, a 2017 graduate of the College of Human Ecology.
"We also extend our sympathy to the loved ones of the three other victims, including New York Police Officer Didarul Islam. We extend our deepest condolences to all the families whose loved ones were lost in this senseless act.
"This tragedy affected many Cornellians, including our faculty and staff who work nearby on Lexington Avenue, some of whom endured a lockdown. I can only imagine the anxiety felt by everyone in the vicinity of this frightening crime scene."
Before university, Hyman attended Riverdale Country School, an independent school in New York City. There, she was an accomplished athlete, competing in football, swimming and lacrosse and was even the captain of all three sports during her senior year.
Kari Ostrem, head of the school, said in a statement Tuesday: “We are simply heartbroken by this loss, and will forever remember Julia for her light, her bright smile and infectious laugh, and the kindness and sense of community that she brought to school every day."
Jewish podcast network Living Lchaim have also paid tribute to Hyman, saying: "We mourn the heartbreaking loss of Julia Hyman, a proud young Jewish woman, 2020 Cornell graduate and rising professional at Rudin Management, whose life was stolen in the Midtown shooting at 345 Park Avenue.
"At just 27, Julia carried herself with strength, kindness, and purpose. She was building a career and a future, proud of who she was and where she came from.
"We honour her light, her Jewish pride, and the beautiful life she was creating. May her memory be a blessing and an inspiration to live with the same courage and heart she did."
Other victims of the attack include Wesley LePatner, a prominent Jewish figure and mother of two, NYPD officer Didarul Islam and security guard Aland Etienne.
Police are currently investigating the motive behind the shooting. A note was found on the suspected shooter that showed he had some grievances with the NFL.
