A historic synagogue in Odessa, Ukraine suffered significant damage and caught fire yesterday after being hit by a Russian suicide drone.
The Old Peresip Synagogue was built in the early 1890s to serve the city’s growing Jewish population, funded by local residents. On Monday evening, a Russian Shahed suicide drone hit the building, causing a large fire to break out which continued for much of the night. No injuries were reported.

Since the shul was struck, the city’s Jewish community has called on international leaders and human rights organisations to urgently speak out against the targeting of civilians and religious infrastructure.
Odessa’s Jewish community strongly condemned the drone attack by Russian forces, with the vice president of the Odessa Jewish Community, Rabbi Rafael Kruskal, exclaiming that attacking houses of worship “crosses a moral red line”.

Rabbi Kruskal, who is also CEO of Tikva, said: “When a house of worship is attacked, I expect the world to condemn this act of brutality. Senseless and aimless violence that targets religious sites and civilians crosses a moral red line – one that has been violated too many times. This must stop. Our communities, our children, and our sacred institutions deserve protection, not destruction.”

The city’s chief rabbi, Rabbi Schlomo Baksht, stated: “A day after we mourn the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, we now mourn a new and painful loss – the severe damage to the Peresip Synagogue in Odessa.”
He described the site as “a house of prayer, memory, and holiness, housing ancient scrolls and sacred books… Its destruction is a wound to our community and our heritage.”
