Poland’s new defence minister 'agreed with antisemitic conspiracy theory'

articlemain

Poland’s new defence minister allegedly claimed that there is a Jewish plan to dominate the world.

The reported comments by Antoni Macierewicz, who represents the right-wing Law and Justice party, were revealed after his party secured an absolute majority in the country’s general election.

Back in 2002, Mr Macierewicz reportedly told Radio Maryjua that he read the Protocols of the Elders of Zion – an antisemitic propaganda text that purported to reveal a Jewish plan for global domination via control of the economy and media.

He told one listener: “Experience shows that there are such groups in Jewish circles.”

His comments have been condemned by anti-racist campaigners.

Polish author Rafał Pankowski said: “He is well known for his divisive, radical style of politics, which is rooted in the nationalist identity discourse of Radio Maryja.

“The political culture of Law and Justice seems strongly influenced by such discourse. It is a sad time for Polish and European democracy if the promotion of conspiracy theories is rewarded with high-level appointments.”

His comments have been condemned by anti-racist campaigners – but a spokesman for Mr Macierewicz attempted to distance him from the comments.

He said: “Mr Macierewicz condemns antisemitism in all its forms.

“Historians including Deputy Macierewicz believe that the Protocols are an antisemitic hoax.”

The spokesman went onto suggest that Mr Macierewicz read the text for academic purposes.

After the comments were exposed revealed by Polish author Rafał Pankowski, Mr Macierewicz’ office distributed an endorsement statement from American Jew Justin Schulberg, who advised the Polish minister from May to June this year. He described his party as: “One of the strongest supporters of Israel on the world stage”.

Mr Pankowski said: “He is well known for his divisive, radical style of politics, which is rooted in the nationalist identity discourse of Radio Maryja.

“The political culture of Law and Justice seems strongly influenced by such discourse. It is a sad time for Polish and European democracy if the promotion of conspiracy theories is rewarded with high-level appointments.”
