Phil Spector gets 19 years for murder

articlemain

The music producer Phil Spector has been jailed for a minimum of 19 years over the murder of the actress Lana Clarkson.

Spector, 69, was given 15 years to life for second-degree murder and an additional four for personal use of a gun in Los Angeles on Friday.

The actress was found dead from a gunshot wound at Spector's mansion in February 2003. He is reportedly now selling his 30-room mansion in Los Angeles to fund an appeal.

He has asked his wife Rachelle Short to arrange the sale and to store valuable artefacts from his rock’n’roll life, including musical instruments given to him by John Lennon and Ike Turner, for a possible auction, according to the Times Online.

But the sale of the mock-French mansion in Grand View Drive, Alhambra, may cover only a small part of his legal bills, according to estate agents, who say its value has fallen from £800,000) to £500,000 in recent months.

Spector’s lawyer, Doron Weinberg, said his client “was doing as well as can be expected”, but looking forward to his appeal.

A spokesman for the actress’s family said: “After six years of character assassination by Mr Spector’s lawyers, we are pleased with the result. There is no joy here, but now he knows that actions have consequences.”
