A 35-year-old man is being investigated for attempted murder after making an antisemitic remark and stabbing a 35-year-old Jewish man six times in Paris on Monday, the French language Le Parisien reported.

The two had been childhood friends and had reconnected recently. The Jewish man subsequently filed a complaint after the suspect allegedly made insulting calls and directed antisemitic abuse toward him, the publication reported.

Police apprehended the suspect at his residence three hours after the stabbing.

The Union of French Jewish Students (UEJF) wrote, in French, that it is “deeply shocked by the antisemitic attack.” It added that “the perpetrator must be heavily condemned.”

In France, antisemitic incidents from Oct. 1 to the end of December 2023 increased 1,000% compared to the previous months.
