Ireland’s Jewish leaders have urged the country’s newly elected president, Catherine Connolly, to be a uniting force despite concern over her remarks about Hamas.

Backed by major left-wing parties, Connolly has been elected the tenth president of the Republic of Ireland in a landslide victory. She vowed to be an "inclusive president" and a “voice for peace”.

But Connolly was criticised for her comments in an interview on BBC Radio Ulster last month in which she said what had happened on October 7 was "absolutely wrong", but that "history did not start on 7 October".

“I come from Ireland which has a history of colonisation. I would be very wary of telling a sovereign people how to run their country,” she said.
