A local Namibian politician named Adolf Hitler Uunona is expected to be re-elected on Wednesday as voters in his small constituency head to the polls.
Uunona, who bears the unfortunate name says he "is not like" the infamous Nazi leader and is, in fact, a member of the country's left-leaning party, the South West Africa People’s Organisation.
Uunona told the Namibian: "[I] didn’t have a choice [in my name]... My father gave me this name Adolf Hitler, but it does not mean I have Adolf Hitler’s character or resemble that of Adolf Hitler of Germany.
"Hitler was a controversial person who captured and killed people across the globe. I am not like him.”
German influence spread in the African country as it was under colonial rule between 1884 and 1915. Much of this influence has remained throughout the 20th century, with many Namibians giving their children Germanic names.
It is unclear as to why Uunona's parents chose this specific name for their child, born in 1966.
Uunona is expected to be re-elected for the Ompundja constituency, which is located in the Oshana Region of Namibia, where he first entered office in 2004. He has previously won re-election bids in 2015 and 2020.
