articlemain

The world’s 20 richest people lost more than £50bn from their combined wealth last year according to the latest report by Forbes.

The Forbes report, released today, found that the total wealth of those who made it onto the list for 2016 was $827bn compared to $899bn in 2015.

However, Jewish Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg won’t be feeling the effects of this. As the biggest gainer on the list, his wealth grew by $11.2bn, giving him a total net worth of $44.6bn and landing him the position of sixth richest person in the world.

Closely following him is philanthropist and founder of software communications company Oracle, Larry Ellison, who made it to number seven on the list, and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg at number eight.

Still in the top 20 the Jewish brains behind Google - Larry Page and Sergey Brin – ranked twelfth and thirteenth respectively. The list comes days after Google pledged $2 million to charity groups in San Francisco working to eliminate racial disparities in education.

Sheldon Adelson and Holocaust survivor George Soros return to the Forbes list at 22 and 23. American casino mogul Adelson has a total net worth of $25.2bn according to the list and is a generous funder of pro-Israel Republican presidential candidates and a strong backer of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

As the list above reflects, the Forbes report was dominated by men. Of the 190 women that made it onto the list, the richest self-made woman - Zhou Qunfei, founder of the touchscreen maker Lens Technology – ranks at number 205, with $5.9bn. Bill Gates topped the list for the third year in a row, with a total fortune of $75bn.
