Man killed after attempt to breach Israel-Gaza border

Israeli troops have shot and killed a man after hundreds of Palestinians attempted to breach the Israel-Gaza border.

The IDF said around 300 people had approached the border fence at locations throughout the Gaza Strip in an apparent attempt to cross into southern Israel on Friday.

When rocks were thrown at Israeli troops on the other side the soldiers fired warning shots at the protesters' legs, an army spokesperson said.

A 20-year-old man was killed and around 19 people injured during the incident, a Palestinian health official said.

It is understood that Gazans have repeatedly entered the "no-go zone" around the border since Wednesday's ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

Palestinian officials claimed the shooting was "a clear breach" of the ceasefire.

IDF spokeswoman Avital Leibovich said the Palestinian attempts to breach the border fence were also in breach of the agreement, and that Israeli troops had "responded with warning shots".

She confirmed one man had crossed the border, but it was not clear what action had been taken against him.
