A Tokyo rabbi has spoken of the devastation he has seen during his weekly visits to help refugees in north east Japan.

Rabbi Binyomin Y Edery, of Chabad, has been doing the 10-hour journey to deliver goods to Sendai and Fukushima since the earthquake and tsunami on March 11.

He said: "The situation is very difficult. Hundreds of thousands of people are sleeping on the floor in city halls."

The Jewish Community of Japan (JCJ), together with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, has donated over $60,000 towards soup kitchens in the Ishinomaki area.
