Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement leader Raed Salah is beginning a nine-month jail sentence, the High Court of Justice having rejected his appeal against conviction on charges of incitement. However, his sentence has been reduced from 11 months to nine months. The case related to a sermon Salah delivered in 2007.
According to Israeli media reports, High Court judge Salim Joubran argued that Salah's conviction for incitement to racism should remain, but he should be acquitted of incitement to violence. He also suggested that the sentence be reduced to six months community service.
But while agreeing to shorten the sentence, the two other judges decreed that original convictions should stand.
