X will crack down on accounts that post artificial intelligence-generated war footage after a glut of fake scenes purporting to to be from the latest Iran war has sprung up on the platform.
One of the many clips to have amassed millions of views and thousands of reposts claims to show Tel Aviv being hit by dozens of missiles. The accompanying caption reads: “Tel Aviv, stripped of illusion, as you have never witnessed it.”
Despite tell-tale signs the video is fake – for example, solar panels seen on surrounding buildings are distorted – the clip has been viewed four million times, reposted eight thousand times and racked up 35,000 “likes”.
Apparently realising that the footage was not in fact authentic, the account user subsequently wrote: “After further verification, this footage appears to be AI-generated. I shared it because the scene reflects, painfully, what Gaza has endured under Israeli bombardment.”

They added: “The video may not be real, but the devastation it evokes is real, and it mirrors what Palestinians have lived through.”
It is one of many such AI-generated videos to have attracted widespread attention online since the onset of the war on Saturday.
Now X has warned users that accounts that monetise their posts will be penalised for posting such ‘misleading” content.
Announcing revisions to X's “creator revenue sharing” policies in a post yesterday, Nikita Bier, X's head of product, wrote: “During times of war, it is critical that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today’s AI technologies, it is trivial to create content that can mislead people.
“Starting now, users who post AI-generated videos of an armed conflict – without adding a disclosure that it was made with AI – will be suspended from creator revenue sharing for 90 days."
Bier said that subsequent violations will result in a “permanent suspension” from the programme.
He added: “We will continue to refine our policies and product to ensure X can be trusted during these critical moments.”
It has not been made clear if X will also punish those who repost content and how it will determine who is reposting fake videos with the knowledge.
