In response, Israel carried out more than a dozen airstrikes on Gaza , hitting key targets including the office of the leader of Hamas in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, and what the IDF described as “Hamas’s secret military intelligence HQ”.
Hamas continued to fire dozens of missiles into Israel, some of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defence system, and others which fell in open spaces.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short a visit to the United States in response to the latest escalation, telling reporters in Washington: “Israel will not tolerate this, I will not tolerate this," and vowing the country would “respond forcefully to this wanton aggression.”

Israeli schools in the vicinity of the Gaza border were kept closed on Tuesday, and public bomb shelters were opened.
