Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) conductor Zubin Mehta’s five-decade career has been marked by his induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Mr Mehta was joined by colleagues, as well as his wife Nancy and actor Kirk Douglas, when he became the 2434th recipient of a star on the famous Beverley Hills boulevard.
Born in Mumbai in 1936, Mr Mehta's father founded the Bombay Symphony Orchestra. Mr Mehta himself trained in Vienna and in 1961, despite his youth, was offered the top job at the IPO.
In his career Mr Mehta has also worked with the Los Angeles and Vienna Philharmonics. Members of those orchestras and the IPO performed at the ceremony in Los Angeles last night.
Mr Mehta, who is an honorary citizen of Tel Aviv, said: “I have to say, what a wonderful surprise to have three orchestras I have worked with perform for all of us today.”
The IPO also performed in San Francisco on Sunday evening.
