Fox News withdraws antisemitic cartoon of financier George Soros

The network backtracked after pressure from the ADL

Right wing TV network Fox News has deleted an antisemitic cartoon of Jewish financier George Soros as a sinister puppet master figure.

The network deleted the cartoon after pressure from the Anti-Defamation League, an anti-hate organization based in the US.

The ADL accused fox of “casting a Jewish individual as a puppet master who manipulates national events for malign purposes.”

The group released a statement via twitter saying: “As we have told @FoxNews numerous times, casting a Jewish individual as a puppet master who manipulates national events for malign purposes conjures up long-standing antisemitic tropes about Jewish power + contributes to the normalization of antisemitism, this needs to be removed.”

The cartoon repeated tropes about the Hungarian financier that have been common on rightwing platforms for years. In 2016, fox host Glenn Beck came upnder fire for his portrayal of Soros in a documentary.

Mr Beck made a reference to Mr. Soros, who is worth more than $14bn as a “puppet master” and suggested he was “at the centre” of the economic crisis. He said this against an image of a Star of David.

At the time, Anti Defamation League director Abraham Foxman called the comments “totally over the top”.
