Buenos Aires rabbi wins parliament seat

A rabbi who has worked tirelessly for justice for the victims of the Buenos Aires Jewish centre bombing has been elected to the city's parliament.

Rabbi Sergio Bergman, who won with three times more votes than the second-placed candidate, is the founder of Active Memory.

The group was set up in the aftermath of the attack on the AMIA building in 1994, in which 85 people were killed. For a decade it organised weekly protests calling for justice, outside Argentina's Supreme Court.

Before the election Rabbi Bergman told JTA: "I receive criticisms that I'm on the right or that I ask for law and order, but nobody criticises me for being Jewish."
