The number of people confirmed dead as a result of the Bondi Beach terror attack has risen to 16, New South Wales Police have announced.

A 10-year-old girl is among those to have died in hospital, police have been told, while the oldest victim was believed to be 87.

It is unclear from the statement released by officials whether any of the gunmen involved in the attack, unleashed as members of Sydney’s Jewish community gathered to celebrate ahead of the first night of Chanukah, were included in the latest death toll figure.

Confirming the updated figure, New South Wales Police said in a statement, released shortly after 6.30am on Monday, local time: “Police are continuing to investigate a mass shooting that resulted in 16 people dying and 40 people being injured in Sydney’s east yesterday evening.
