Students from Australia’s Charles Stuart University have been criticised after photos emerged showing them dressed in Nazi uniforms, concentration camp prisoner clothing and Ku Klux Klan robes.
Other students were reported in blackface.
The group were at a “politically incorrect” themed party on Thursday, which was promoted on Facebook.
The description on the event’s Facebook page told party-goers to “grab a kit that would legally get you in s*** and hook right in,” said the Sydney Morning Herald.
In one photo posted to Instagram, three students are seen wearing the apparel of concentration camp prisoners, complete with “Jude” yellow Stars of David on their arms, while another looms behind them dressed in Nazi uniform.
Dvir Abramovich, chairman of Australia’s Anti-Defamation Commission, described the outfits as “enormously disturbing”, saying the students had “crossed every line of decency.”
In a statement, he said: “Such vulgar, insensitive and shocking behaviour not only mocked the suffering of the victims of racism and genocide, but trivialized the human horrors perpetrated by the Nazis”.
Charles Stuart University’s Vice Chancellor Andrew Vann told Fairfax Media that his institution would be “taking the strongest possible action” and investigating the issue.
“We’re really disappointed that this kind of behaviour is associated with us. It’s not appropriate, it doesn’t match the university’s values,” he added.
