An alleged Israeli spy has been arrested in Iran, the country's media reported Monday.
Several alleged spies linked to other countries were also arrested in Iran’s northwestern East Azerbaijan province, according to the report in the semi-official Fars News Agency, which cites a local intelligence official.
Iran previously linked Israel to the recent killing of one of its top nuclear scientists, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who died outside Tehran last November. The Jewish Chronicle reported earlier this year that the Mossad was behind the killing and smuggled an automated gun into Iran piece by piece.
Meanwhile, the US and Iran were expected to hold indirect talks on the 2015 nuclear deal during a meeting with world powers in Vienna on Tuesday.
“These are early days,” US State department spokesman Ned Price said on Monday.
“We don’t anticipate an early or immediate breakthrough, as these discussions we fully expect will be difficult. But we do believe that these discussions with our partners and, in turn, our partners with Iran is a healthy step forward.”
Former president Donald Trump pulled out of the accord in 2018. His successor, Joe Biden, has said he would be willing to re-enter the deal if Iran "returns to strict compliance"
