Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called for large-scale Arab Spring style protests in the West Bank to build up support for the planned bid for statehood at the United Nations.

Despite opposition from the US government and Israel, the Palestinians remain committed to the unilateral move. Mr Abbas urged Palestinians to not just talk about "popular resistance" but to engage in it every day.

He said: "We are led by the protests of the Arab Spring."

He said the protests should be peaceful, and added: "Make no mistake, we will reach what we desire without intervention from anybody."
