A 95-year-old former Auschwitz paramedic has been charged as being an accessory to the murder of at least 3,681 people.
Hubert Zafke, who until recently was known only as Hubert Z, was charged in a German court on Monday.
The SS sergeant served at the camp between 1943 and 1944 and has been accused of being aware of the camp’s activities and purpose, despite not being directly involved with any killings.
He had previously been deemed too fragile for trial but the higher court of Rostock in northern Germany reversed that decision in December.
This trial is likely to be one of the last in Germany linked to the holocaust.
