Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw have joined a number of other celebrities in donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to March For Our Lives, the march against guns being organised by students at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen students and teachers were shot at the school last week, by a former student.
George and Amal Clooney tweeted their contribution - of $500,000 - on Tuesday and they have since been joined by Oprah Winfrey, who matched that. Spielberg and Capshaw have done the same.
“The young students in Florida and now across the country are already demonstrating their leadership with a confidence and maturity that belies their ages,” said Capshaw and Spielberg. “Kate and I applaud their efforts to take a stand for the benefit of this and future generations. They are an inspiration to us all, and we are joining in this movement with a donation of $500,000.”
According to Variety, Jeffrey Katzenberg, the former head of Disney, and his wife Marilyn also announced a $500,000 donation, and said they would join the event.
The march is set to take place on March 24 in Washington DC. The organisers say it will be used to to demand that "we end gun violence and mass shootings in our schools today."
